Not trying the acne treatment long enough – It is common that many discontinue treatment after a few days when no improvements can be seen. Patience is extremely important when treating acne. Even if the acne comes very fast, the skin reacts very slowly to treatment and it takes usually 1 to 3 months to see and feel improvements. It is also very common that the skin even gets worse before is gets better.

Over-cleaning the skin – It is very common that people with oily and acne prone skin over-wash and over-scrub the face. Acne is not due to dirty skin and scrubbing the skin may actually worsen the acne. When over-cleaning the skin, the protective barrier gets destroyed which cause irritation and trigger the production of sebum.

Popping pimples – It is very tempting to pop the pimple. However, this may prolong the healing process and the pimple may get even worse. The infection can get pushed further into the skin causing more swelling and redness. The risk of permanent scarring is increased.

Tanning – Even if it feels like the sun makes wonders to acne prone skin, the log term effect of UV-light is dangerous. Almost all treatments for acne contain ingredients that make the skin more sensitive to the sun. It is highly important to use sunscreen to protect the skin while using acne products. When the acne heals the new skin cells that are formed are also very sensitive to the sun. If no sunscreen is used, the risk of getting hyperpigmentation is very high.
